Arrested for nothing. Charged with nothing. Silent for nothing.

In August 2021, Nana Yaw Ananse was arrested without cause during an artistic-activism mural project at Chale Wote Festival. Three nights in a police cell ended in a verdict of nothing at all: No Charge.

The cell revealed its own economy — officers trading with inmates, men improvising furniture and pillows from plastic bottles, a wall papered with nudes, calendars and footballers' wealth clipped from newspapers, entertainment standing in stark contrast to the lives around it.

No Charge!!! is his response: clear plastic bottles, rubber, newsprint, film, photography, performance and installation, restaged and colour-graded into scenes the physical work alone can't hold. Clear bottles stand for hope and transparency; red caps for the injustice and bloodshed that follow wrongful incarceration.

The series doesn't ask for sympathy. It asks Ghana's justice and prison system to look at what it produces when no one is watching — and to change it.
